Bristol is a city located in the southwest of England with a population of around 440,000 people. It is the sixth largest city in England and the eighth in the United Kingdom. Bristol is known for its advancements in science, being named one of Britain’s six science cities by the UK government. Research and scientific gains are made in the universities, the hospitals and centres such as the zoo and theatres.
Bristol has two universities, the University of Bristol and the University of the West of England (which was formerly Bristol Polytechnic). There are two further educational buildings and three theological colleges, as well as around 130 primary schools, around 20 secondary schools and three learning centres. Several independent schools operate in Bristol including Bristol Grammar School, Clifton High School and all-boys school Queen Elizabeth’s Hospital.
Famous scientists have been produced from Bristol including chemist Humphry Davy and physicist Paul Dirac who received the Nobel Prize for his work in quantum mechanics in 1933. Another winner of the Nobel Prize was Bristolian Cecil Frank Powell for his work in nuclear processes in 1950.
