ITIL® is a framework for managing IT services from inception through to development and improvement. Developed over many years from the experiences of businesses and the UK government, ITIL® is based on global best practice for delivering value from IT.

ITIL® training approaches service management from the perspective of a lifecycle, with five core publications which cover each lifecycle stage. These are Service Strategy, Service Design, Service Transition, Service Operation and Continual Service Improvement (CSI).

ITIL® has its roots in a UK government department called the CCTA (Central Computer and Telecommunications Agency), who in the 1980s developed a set of standard practices for IT management. Organisations around Europe began to use the method in the 90s, with the second version of ITIL® arriving in 2001 and Version 3 being released in 2007.

ITIL® training is supported by a comprehensive certification scheme which spans the entire IT service lifecycle, from design to delivery and improvement, and the entire range of ITIL® knowledge from Foundation to Expert.

ITIL® Foundation

The ITIL® scheme starts with ITIL® Foundation, an entry level qualification which introduces the basic principles and elements of ITIL for those new to it.

ITIL® Practitioner

ITIL® Practitioner follows on from ITIL® Foundation and is designed for those looking to adopt and adapt ITIL® into their organisation. It provides guidance for using the Continual Service Improvement (CSI) approach to identify and deliver service improvements.

ITIL® Intermediate

ITIL® Intermediate qualifications are divided into two groups depending on what area of ITIL® they cover: Service Strategy or Service Lifecycle. Each one focuses on a different area of the lifecycle and candidates can take as many or as few certifications as they choose.

ITIL® Expert

The ITIL® training courses are rounded off by ITIL® Expert, which certifies knowledge of all areas of the IT Service Management Lifecycle and is gained upon passing the Managing Across The Lifecycle (MALC) exam.

Yes, our ITIL® courses are accredited by BCS, The Chartered Institute of IT on behalf of AXELOS.
Yes, our courses are available all over the world in 196 countries, and our ITIL® online courses and virtual training can be accessed anywhere.
That depends on the certification you choose. Course durations are as follows; ITIL® Foundation - 3 days, ITIL® Practitioner - 2 days, ITIL® Service Lifecycle - 3 days, ITIL® Service Strategy - 5 days, and ITIL® MALC – 5 days.
If you are convinced you have gone as far as you’d like to go with ITIL®, there are a number of options for what to study next. If you’d like to enter the world of project management, you could study PRINCE2® Foundation. As ITIL® and PRINCE2® are both AXELOS products, they complement each other and are designed to work together. In larger organisations and at the enterprise level, COBIT is a good complement to ITIL® because it provides a structure for effective IT governance with a broader scope of coverage. DevOps and ITIL® is also a combination worth looking at. The two approaches, although quite different in some ways, both seek to deliver the same goal: value to the business by focusing on the customer.
As an AXELOS ATO (Accredited Training Organisation) and Strategic Partner, all our ITIL® courses include the relevant examinations as part of the fee. Alternatively, BCS runs public sessions for their exams at their offices. The ITIL® Foundation exam is also available to take online.
ITIL® Foundation has no prerequisite, but every certification afterwards does. ITIL® Practitioner and the ITIL® Intermediates have a prerequisite of ITIL® Foundation. Those taking the ITIL® MALC exam must hold ITIL® Foundation certification and have gained 17 credits throughout the ITIL® scheme by studying ITIL® Foundation and a selection of ITIL® Intermediate qualifications.
