History of Software Testing

Software testing originated in the 1950’s, when debugging was the chief form of Systems Testing. In the 1970’s this approach was modified to a destruction-based technique, where testers would break down code to find gaps. This technique was used until the introduction of prevention oriented methods that allowed for the implementation of more reliable software applications.

Glenford J. Myers described the distinction between Debugging and Software Testing in 1979 and a great leap was made towards the utilisation of Software Testing, as it is used today.
