Thousands of organisations have taken a PRINCE2 training course to improve their projects. Below are a few examples of how different business have benefited from using the PRINCE2 Methodologies.
Company: City University London
The Knowledge Academy is currently in the second year of a three year contract to deliver PRINCE2® training to Management Masters students at City University London. Each Summer, the class of approximately 30 students completes the Foundation and Practitioner courses as part of their University course. This means that when the students finish their Master’s Degree, they also have a professional, Industry Recognised Qualification to support their educational portfolio.
Possessing this extra qualification makes the Graduates much more desirable employees to prospective Organisations, and increases their earning potential as Graduates. This flagship scheme has helped City University to make themselves more attractive to prospective students, offering something more than just a Masters Degree, with no increase in tuition fees.
Company: The Port of Rotterdam
Sector: Port Management - Maasvlakte Project
PRINCE2® training has been successfully implemented in a project to expand the port of Rotterdam. In the 2000s, the port of Rotterdam was one of the busiest ports in the world and was running out of space. The answer was to expand the port outwards towards the North Sea, in a project called “Maasvlakte 2”. A project management consultancy firm called Ambition Group, led by Dr Richard Moret, recommended PRINCE2® as a method of managing the project, but the board were unsure of its suitability for a project of Maasvlakte’s size. The Project Director decided to test PRINCE2® by using it in the first stage of the project: the project initiation.
Initially, PRINCE2® was met by resistance from those staff who felt they already knew about project management. By meeting such staff weekly and working with them closely, Dr Moret managed to smoothly introduce PRINCE2®, and everyone quickly started to understand the benefits of PRINCE2® training. By the end of the project in 2012, everyone involved was fully supportive of the adopted PRINCE2® methodology and it was used to manage the entire project. The project was delivered on time and within budget thanks to the rigorous governance provided by the PRINCE2® techniques.
Company: British Council
Sector: Education and Government
PRINCE2® has been utilised by the British Council since 2009 - enabling them to deliver global technical change through enhanced communication and organisational adaptations. The PRINCE2® framework has allowed the British Council to engage in information transfers and sharing networks - which has fundamentally enhanced operational performance. The British Council has received significant operational benefits since implementing the PRINCE2® methodology, as all of their Global IS team are PRINCE2® certified, meaning that the whole business utilises a common terminology-based language and set of underpinning principles, which has also been key for maximal stakeholder engagement.
The implementation of the methodology has ensured that the aims, objectives, roles, and assumptions are clear and that risks, budgets, and resource expenditure are frequently monitored. The British Council recognised that the potential implications of mistakes and project failures could be catastrophic, due to dealing with large data transfers. Hence, the standardised PRINCE2® methodology allowed them to create a meticulous plan to calculate the project’s realistic deliverables, and work out an accountability framework - ensuring that every project contributor knew their role’s responsibilities.
Company: Scheidt & Bachmann GmbH
Sector: IT and Software Installation
Scheidt & Bachmann GmbH, the world's leading fare collection system developer, utilised the PRINCE2® methodology to enhance the probability of success during their ticket fare machine project. Scheidt & Bachmann GmbH were tasked with the project of developing new hardware and software to build 64 rail ticket vending machines for Bayerische Oberlandbahn. The PRINCE2® methodology facilitated the project’s operations - ensuring that delivery was punctual, of significant quality, and to the customer’s requirements, showcasing the benefits of using PRINCE2®. The project had a very strict deadline and list of specifications that had to be adhered to, including: meeting European hardware certification requirements regarding fare accessibility for disabled individuals, software that displayed real-time updates for customers, a banknote recycler, a tariff database (including cross-border tariffs), seat reservations, and the instigation of a customer loyalty scheme.
Guided by the PRINCE2® methodology, Scheidt & Bachmann initiated bi-monthly meetings to review the project’s success and to keep all stakeholders involved with the process - including a customer representatives group, technical operators, and senior managers. Planning, testing phases, and a consideration for risk, allowed the project to run smoothly and within the boundaries of the set tolerances. Due to the complexity of the required software development and the number of stakeholders involved, the project was entirely dependent on proficient project management - hence the implementation of PRINCE2® was key. The project was so successful that Scheidt & Bachmann won the PRINCE2® Best Practice award for the best German PRINCE2® project in 2014.
