Gloucester is a city in Gloucestershire in South West England. Gloucester was originally founded in AD 97 by the Romans. Gloucester has a population of around 126,000 inhabitants. Gloucester has three renowned schools which are: The Kings School, St Mary de Crypt and Sir Thomas Rich’s School. Gloucester also has various comprehensive schools. Gloucester is home to one of the campuses of the University of Gloucestershire. The University traces back to the Mechanics Institute in 1834 and the Cheltenham Training College which was established in 1874. The institute was awarded university status in 2001. The University offers over 190 courses in undergraduate and postgraduate level. The university has three faculties, Media, Arts and Technology and Business Education and Professional Studies. The university is ranked in the top 20 in the UK for biosciences, media & photography, film studies and accounting & finance. The University has some notable alumni, such as Jon Callard who was an England Rugby Union player and Tony Cragg who is a British sculptor. Gloucestershire University has been nominated for many awards, such as the Outstanding Student Services Team and were ranked 50th in the Times Higher Education Student Experience Survey in 2014. In 2015 applications to Gloucestershire University rose by 6%.
