History of ISO 27001

ISO began 1926 as the International Federation of the National Standardisation Associations. During World War 2 it was suspended but after the was ISA was approached by the United Nations Standards Coordinating Committee, the UNSCC, with a proposal to start a new global standards body. In 1946, UNSCC and ISA joined forces with delegates from 25 countries and agreed to join forces to create the new International Organisation for Standardisation with the new company officially beginning to operate a year later.

The IEC held its inaugural conference in June 1906 after discussions between the British and American Institutions of Electrical Engineers along with some others. In 1948 they moved their base from London to Geneva.
