What is WASPI?

Women Against State Pension Inequality (WASPI) is a campaign group formed in response to the shift in the state pension age for women from 60 to 65, aligning it with men’s pension age. Women born in the 1950s argue that this change was implemented unfairly, causing some to wait an additional six years to retire, as the state pension age later increased to 66. While WASPI supports the equalisation of pension ages, it contends that the affected women were not given adequate notice. This change significantly impacted their retirement plans, leading to reduced incomes. For years, the campaign group has been advocating for compensation.

WASPI claims that this “injustice” potentially affects over 3 million women, with an estimated 270,000 having passed away while seeking justice. Many of those affected lacked the financial means to bridge the gap, forcing some to work longer.

When Will WASPI Get a Decision?

For the State Pension Age WASPI, the Parliamentary and Health Service Ombudsman concluded their investigation in March 2025. While the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has shown a willingness to address the issue, they have yet to provide a concrete timeline or specify a compensation amount.

However, the recent dissolution of Parliament for the upcoming elections could lead to delays. The newly elected government may need time to reassess the situation. A decision on the State Pension Age WASPI is more likely in the second half of 2025, depending on the new government’s priorities and the need for further discussion.

When Will WASPI get Compensation?

The ombudsman’s report states that the DWP “failed to provide accurate, adequate and timely information” regarding aspects of state pension reform, and it is urging Parliament to intervene. The ombudsman is eager to propose a remedy and has emphasised that complainants should not have to “wait and see” if the DWP will address the failings. Instead, it has called on Parliament to “act swiftly”. However, the exact form of the remedy remains unclear.

There have been numerous calls for compensation for those affected, including from Scottish National Party politician Alan Brown, who suggested the Government should provide payouts of £10,000 or more. However, this is far from guaranteed. In its report, the ombudsman noted that four of the five test cases it examined were “at the higher end of level 4 on the severity of injustice scale”, indicating compensation of £2,950 each. The DWP has stated it is carefully considering the findings and is fully cooperating with the ombudsman’s investigation, but it is not obligated to follow these recommendations.

State Pension Age WASPI Eligibility

The changes in state pension age specifically affect women born between the years 6 April 1950 and 5 April 1960. While the WASPI campaign focuses on women born during this period, it is always advisable to check your own pension age regardless of your birth year.

However, the exact compensation amount for WASPI remains undecided, with the campaign advocating for compensation between £1,000 and £2,950 per woman. Compensation payments could be delivered as lump sums, top-up payments, or early access to the state pension.

How Will These Changes Impact the Future?

As the state pension age increases, you might find yourself having to work longer than you initially planned, especially if you are approaching the state pension age around the time of the increase. If you are affected, you may need to adjust your retirement planning.

Many people, particularly women, rely heavily on state pension income upon reaching retirement, and for some, it is their sole source of income. However, this amount is often insufficient to gain even a “minimum” standard of living in retirement, making it challenging to get by.

According to Retirement Living Standards, you need £31,300 a year to fund a “moderate” retirement. Even a “minimum” standard of living would require an annual income of £14,400.

Conclusion

As the wait for a decision on WASPI continues, the affected women remain hopeful for a fair resolution. "When Will WASPI Get a Decision?" remains a question on everyone’s mind. Nevertheless, the new government’s approach will be crucial in determining the outcome
