Who Can Apply for PMP® Certification?

To apply for the PMP® Certification Exam, you must meet one of the following eligibility requirements:

Option 1: Secondary school qualification (high school diploma or equivalent)

1) 60 months (5 years) of experience leading projects 

2) 35 hours of project management training or an active CAPM® certification 

or

Option 2: Four-year degree (Bachelor's degree or equivalent)

1) 36 months (3 years) of experience leading projects 

2) 35 hours of project management training or an active CAPM® certification 

or

Option 3: Degree from a PMI Global Accreditation Centre (GAC)-accredited programme

1) 24 months (2 years) of experience leading projects 

2) The accredited programme satisfies the project management training requirement

How to Obtain PMP® Certification?

Follow these steps to successfully add PMP Certification to your profile:

1) Fill out the PMP application on PMI's official website (available online or as a downloadable PDF).

2) Review PMI's Certification Handbook to confirm that PMP is the right fit based on your qualifications.

3) PMI Reviews Your Application typically within 5–10 business days.

4) Pay the exam fee once your application is approved.

5) Your Application May Be Selected for a Random Audit. If so, you'll be notified by email and asked to submit: 

a) Copies of your educational qualifications

b) Proof of 35 contact hours of project management training

c) Signed verification of your project experience from a supervisor or manager

6) Once Approved (audited or not), PMI issues your PMI ID and exam scheduling details.

7) You then Have One Year from approval to take the exam, with up to three attempts within that eligibility window.

How to Renew PMP Certification?

The PMP® Certification is valid for three years but can be renewed or maintained by completing 60 Professional Development Units (PDUs). PDU is the hours you spent on authorised Project Management activities throughout that period.

1) Earn 60 PDUs: Complete 60 PDUs during the three-year cycle through eligible professional development activities. PMI requires at least 35 Education PDUs, while up to 25 PDUs may come from Giving Back activities. 

2) Report Your PDUs: Record and submit earned PDUs through the Continuing Certification Requirements System (CCRS), my PMI dashboard, or the PMI mobile app. 

3) Fulfil CCR Requirements: Ensure that the required number and distribution of PDUs have been completed. Once these requirements are satisfied, PMI confirms eligibility to renew the certification. 

4) Pay the Renewal Fee: After becoming eligible for renewal, submit the applicable certification renewal fee through PMI’s online system. The certification renewal fee is separate from PMI membership renewal. 

5) Receive Renewal Confirmation: Once the renewal process and payment are completed, PMI updates the certification with new active dates, beginning the next three-year renewal cycle.
