What is PgMP® Certification?

Before diving into the application process, let's first understand what the Program Management Professional (PgMP®) certification is. This certification is a globally recognised credential offered by the Project Management Institute (PMI). It validates an individual's expertise in program management, demonstrating their ability to manage multiple related projects and achieve strategic business goals.

Requirements of PgMP® Certification

Before starting your PgMP® application, check that you meet PMI’s education and experience requirements. You must qualify through one of the following three routes:

1) Secondary School Qualification

If you hold a secondary school diploma or its global equivalent, you need:

1) 48 months of project management experience or PMP® certification.

2) 84 months of programme management experience.

2) Bachelor’s Degree or Higher

If you hold a bachelor’s degree or higher, or its global equivalent, you need:

1) 48 months of project management experience or PMP® certification.

2) 48 months of programme management experience.

3) Degree From a GAC-Accredited Programme

If you hold a bachelor’s degree or higher from a programme accredited by PMI’s Global Accreditation Center (GAC), you need:

1) 36 months of project management experience or PMP® certification.

2) 36 months of programme management experience.

The qualifying experience must fall within the past 15 years. PMP® certification can satisfy the project management experience requirement, but you must still meet the programme management experience requirement for your route.

How to Apply for the PgMP® Exam?

The following steps explain the application, review and examination stages.

Step 1: Determine Eligibility

Before applying, ensure you meet all the necessary requirements. Evaluate your education credentials and project and program management experience to confirm your eligibility for the PgMP® Certification.

Step 2: Create a PMI Account

If you haven't already, create an account on the PMI website. This account will be used for your certification application and future interactions with PMI.

Step 3: Submit the Application

Complete the PgMP application form, providing accurate and detailed information about your education, project management experience, and program management experience. Verify all the details before submitting to avoid any errors or discrepancies.

Step 4: Application Review

Once you submit your application, PMI reviews it for eligibility. If selected for an audit, provide the supporting documents PMI requests.

Step 5: Pay the Exam Fee and Complete Panel Review

After your application is accepted, follow PMI’s instructions to pay the exam fee. Once payment and any required audit are complete, a panel of PgMP-certified professionals assesses your programme management experience summaries. This assessment takes approximately 60 days, and you must pass it before scheduling your exam.

Step 6: Schedule the Exam

After passing the panel review, use PMI’s eligibility notification to schedule your examination at an authorised testing centre.

Step 7: Exam Preparation

Prepare for the PgMP certification exam thoroughly. Utilise study materials, PgMP books, practice exams, and other resources to enhance your understanding of program management principles and best practices.

Step 8: Take the Exam

On the exam day, arrive at the testing centre with the required identification documents. The PgMP exam consists of 170 multiple-choice questions, with a total duration of 240 minutes. It evaluates your ability to apply program management knowledge to practical situations.

After completing the exam, you will receive results according to PMI's examination reporting procedures. If you pass, you will earn the PgMP certification after PMI completes the applicable verification process. If unsuccessful, you can retake the examination according to PMI's retake policy.
