Canberra is the capital city of Australia and largest inland city. The population of Canberra is around 380,000 and is located 170 miles south-west of Sydney in the Northern end of the Australian Capital Territory. Canberra was elected as the nation’s capital in 1908 against the two rivals Melbourne and Sydney. There are two main universities in Canberra the Australian National University which has over 10,000 full-time students and the University of Canberra with over 8,000 students attending. During the 2006-2008 period some schools were closed and others were merged together. There is a high percentage of non-government run schools in Canberra that make up almost 41% of ACT enrolments. There are a number of military schools in Canberra including the Australian Defence Force Academy and the Royal Military College.
