Providence is the capital of Rhode Island. It is one of the oldest cities in the United States having been established in 1636. It has a population of around 177,000 people and is located in the Providence County. The Providence Public School District educates around 30,000 students throughout 25 elementary schools, 9 middle schools and 13 high schools. Providence is also home to the Rhode Island School for the Deaf which is a highly praised school for children who are hard of hearing or deaf. There are five universities and colleges in Providence; Brown University, Johnson & Wales University, Providence College, Rhode Island College and Rhode Island School of Design. Brown University is a private Ivy League university which was founded in 1764. Brown has some of the most selective processes in the United States and has an acceptance rate of 8% so enrols around 8500 students per year. Brown has produced seven winners of the Nobel Prize, fifty seven scholars and eight billionaires. The unemployment rate in Providence is at 6.9%. This has improved greatly since last year’s rate of 9%.
