Memphis is located within Tennessee on the fourth flood plain on Chickasaw Bluff which is just below the Mississippi and Wolf River. Only established in 1819 as a city within Tennessee, Memphis is the youngest of the major cities within the state. It is also the largest city within Tennessee as it was home to around 653,450 people within 2013. Memphis also has a large metropolitan population estimated at 1,316,100 people in 2010. Schools run within the city of Memphis can either be public or privately owned schools. The public schools are run by the Shelby County Schools and consists of over 200 elementary, middle and high schools, some of the private schools include both schools for boys, girls and both these include the Lausanne Collegiate School, Christian Brothers High School, Briarcrest Christian School, First Assembly Christian School, and the Hutchison School. Some of the Memphis colleges and universities include Memphis College of Art, LeMoyne–Owen College, University of Memphis Cecil C. Humphreys School of Law, Christian Brothers University and the University of Memphis. As well as being the oldest public college of dentistry within the United States, the University of Tennessee College of Dentistry is also the oldest dental college in the south of the United States as it was founded in 1878.
