Kelowna is a city in the Okanagan Valley on the southern interior of British Columbia. The city is the third largest in the province and is the 22nd largest city in all of Canada. Kelowna has a population of about 180,000. The name of this city comes from an Okanagan term that means “grizzly bear”. Education in Canada is mostly free and publicly funded. It is overseen by the federal, provincial and local governments, with the education within provincial jurisdiction and the curriculum overseen by the province. There are also a number of privately run religious schools in the area such as St. Joseph Elementary and Kelowna Christian School. Canada’s higher has a very good reputation. However there is no formal ranking system and students will often choose colleges and universities bases on geographic convenience and the reputation of a particular course. There are a number of higher education institutes in Kelowna and the surrounding area of Okanagan. The University of British Columbia has a campus in Okanagan that offers an intimate learning community that supports its exceptional students and faculties with their new ways of thinking. There are around 8,500 students on this campus from Kelowna and the rest of the Okanagan region as well as those from throughout Canada. The campus also supports a number of international students. The University of British Columbia offers undergraduate and graduate programs in 8 faculties and schools such as biology, psychology, computer science, history and environmental sciences.
