Ghent is the home to Ghent University which was established in 1817 by King William 1 of the Netherlands. Ghent University is a research university, which became the first Dutch speaking University in 1930. Ghent University is one of the largest Flemish Universities, housing over 41,000 students. Ghent is ranked among some of the best Universities in the world. Ghent produced many notable alumni such as Marguerite Legot, who was the first Belgian woman to serve as a government minister and Guy Verhofstadt, a former Prime Minister of Belgium.
