The city also provides two stand-alone universities: The University of Houston–Clear Lake (UHCL) which was established in 1971 and teaches over 8,000 students and University of Houston–Downtown which was founded in 1974 and has nearly 14,000 students attending. Houston is also home to Texas Southern University (TSU) which is a historically black university (HBCU); it was founded in 1927 as Houston Coloured Junior College. It now teaches nearly 10,000 students.
