The first kindergarten in the United States is claimed to have been started in Columbus in 1838. The first junior high school was created in Columbus in 1909 to help pupils bridge the gap from elementary to high school at a time when it was rare for students to continue their education. The city has two public universities; the Ohio State University and the Columbus State Community College. The Ohio State University has one of the largest college campuses in the United States and is also ranked at number 19 for the best public university. Its highest rated programs are its Pharmacy and Veterinary programs. Other private educational facilities include Columbus College of Art and Design, Ohio Business College and Bradford School.
