Kochi, sometimes known as Cochin, is a large port city on the south west coast of India with a population of over 600,000 and an area of over 800 square kilometres. Its official languages are Malayalam and English. Kochi offers a number of excellent public and private schools, both primary and secondary. It also holds a number of notable institutes of higher education such as the Cochin University of Science and Technology and Cochin University. As Kochi is a port city, much of its higher education focuses around maritime and nautical studies, with institutes such as the Central Institute of Fisheries Nautical and Engineering Training and The National Institute of Oceanography both having their bases in Kochi. Kochi is also a hub for cosmopolitan tourism. It is able to boast a unique Keralite cuisine in addition to several shopping malls, museums and palaces.
