Chandigarh is the capital city for both the Haryana and the Punjab states within India. As well as it being the first smoke free city within India it is also the countries first planned city. Chandigarh is a union territory and home to an estimated 1,054,686 people as of 2011. Chandigarh has a relatively low unemployment rate of 02.80% whilst the average rate for India is 03.60%. Education within Chandigarh is very important with primary schools, middle schools and high schools, some of which are overlooked by the Central Board of Secondary Education. The education within Chandigarh can be both private and public, some of these schools include the KB DAV Senior Secondary Public School, Delhi Public School, Century Public School and the St. Stephen's School. There are also a number of English medium schools within the city as English is a very important part of the education system. Chandigarh is also home to a number of different universities and colleges some of which include the DAV College, Ayurvedic College and the Panjab University all of which offer a range of degrees and programs in a variety of subjects.
