The University of Ez-Zitouna was established in 1956, and is one of the oldest teaching establishments in the Arab world, having been formed from the Ez-Zitouna madrassa, which has been in continuous existence since it was founded in 737 C.E. It currently has over 1,200 students enrolled. Other notable universities are the University of Tunis, which was founded in 1945 and has over 28,000 students, Tunisia Private University, the University of Carthage, the Manouba University and Tunis El Manar University.
