With a population of just over 1,000,000, Dakar is the capital city of Senegal and is also the largest city by population in the country. It is renowned for being an administrative hub, with the Senegal National Assembly having its headquarters in the city. It is also home to the Presidential Palace. Its main university, the Cheikh Anta Diop University, also known as the University of Dakar was founded in 1957 and offers an extensive variety of courses and qualifications. It also has over 60,000 students and includes many renowned professors such as Abdoulaye Wade the former president of Senegal and Abdoulaye Bathily a former government minister. The city of Dakar is also known by toursists for its colourful street markets, its stunning examples of architecture such as the Dakar Grand Mosque and its museums which focus particularly on African culture and heritage.
