With a population of just over 1,000,000, Freetown is the capital city of Sierra Leone and is also the largest city by population in the country. It is located to the West of Sierra Leone and is the urban, economic and cultural centre of the country. The city is also known for its education, providing the Fourah Bay College, the oldest University in West Africa. It was founded in 1827 and is a major centre of African, Archive and marine biology studies. Freetown is also home to the Sierra Leone Broadcasting Corporation, making it the centre of state television and radio in the country. In addition the city is known for its historical attractions depicting the history of colonial Africa and its subsequent emancipation.
