With a population of nearly 280,000, Ljubljana is the second largest city by population and the capital of Slovenia. It is located between the northern Adriatic Sea and the Danube region and is situated along a major trade route, making it the economic, cultural and political centre of Slovenia. The city’s main university is the University of Ljubljana, the main building of which is the former seat of the Carolinian president. The university has over 60,000 students enrolled and was founded in 1919 as an institute of medicine, architecture, law and theology. Today however it offers a wider variety of courses and specialisms. The city is also known by tourists for its international music and drama festivals, as the Ljubljana festival is one of the oldest festivals in former Yugoslavia. The city is also home to an impressive array of museums, art galleries and cultural buildings.
