With a population of over 9,000,000, Lima is the capital city of Peru and is located in the central coastal part of the country. The city has over 8,000 primary and secondary schools either public or private, religious or secular. The oldest University in the New World, San Marcos University founded in 1551, can also be found in Lima. In addition to this, Lima has a great number of important higher education institutions such as the Universidad Nacional de Ingenieria, the Universidad Nacional Agraria la Molina and the Universidad Nacional Federico Villarreal which is the second largest university in Peru. Notable figures from Lima include the ex-president Alberto Fujimori who was a University lecturer.
