Nouakchott is the capital and largest city of Mauritania. It is the economic and administrative home of the country. The unemployment rate of Mauritania increased between 2012 and 2104 from 10.1 to 12.8. 10.1 was a record low unemployment rate for the country. Education is compulsory in Mauritania from the age of 6, when children enter elementary education, until the end of middle school at the age of 16. At secondary schools there are 3 options of study Arabic & Islam, modern languages, natural sciences, and mathematics. The city is the home of the University of Nouakchott. It is the only university in Mauritania and it has just 3 faculties namely Arts & Social Sciences, Economy & Law, and Technical Sciences.
