Bamako is the biggest city in Mali and the capital city of the country. It has an estimated population of around 1.9 million people. As of 2006 it was the fastest growing city in Africa and the sixth fastest growing in the world. The unemployment rate in Mali increased between 2011 and 2013 from 10.5 to 10.8 percent. Between 1997 and 2013 the rate averaged around 8.35 and reached an all-time high of 108 percent in 2013. This trend shows a constant increase in the unemployment rate. One university in the city is the University of Bamako. This university was founded in 1996. it is also known as the University of Mali. The main faculties are the science and technology faculties, medical, humanities, arts, social science and law and public service faculties.
