Chișinău is the capital city and the largest city in the world. It is the main economic and industrial centre of the country. It has an estimated population of around 500,000 residents. It is the most economically affluent place in Moldova. The unemployment rate in Moldova decreased from the first quarter of 2015 to the second from 8.5 percent to 4.1 percent. Between 2000 and 2015 the average unemployment rate has been 6.5 percent. There are also a number of private and state-funded universities such as Moldova State University. The standards of this university are continuously improving. The city is home to 12 public and 11 private universities including the Academy of Science of Moldova. It was established in 1946, is the main scientific organization of the Republic of Moldova.
