Beirut is the capital and the biggest city in Lebanon. The population is estimated to be around 1.5 million people. The unemployment rate in Lebanon increased in 2013 to 6.5 percent for around 6.2 percent. However this is still less than the average between 1991 and 2013 which was 7.7 percent. In 2007 it reached a national high of 9 percent. Two of the country’s oldest French and English universities are located in Beirut; American University of Beirut and Université Saint-Joseph. It is also home to the Notre Dame University which is considered to be one of the top universities in the Middle East. The highest ranked university in the country is the American University of Beirut which is ranked 268th in the world.
