Port-au-Prince is the capital city of Haiti and the largest city of the Caribbean country. The Haitian education system is based on the French system, and begins at the preschool moving onto elementary education, which is compulsory. The nest stage of education is the secondary education where 90.5% of secondary schools are private schools. After this, students can move onto higher education, which includes 4 regional public universities, such as the state University of Haiti that is located in the capital city of Port-au-Prince. The university was established in the 1820s, has come under the control of the government. The university has more than 20,000 students, with numerous faculties such as law and economics, medicine and pharmacy, administration and management, science and topography, and agronomy and veterinary. Port-au-Prince also has other educational institutions including vocational schools and international schools like Union School, founded in 1919, which is an American-style pre-college education. The Ministry of Education can also be located in Port-au-Prince at the Palace of Ministries.
