Port-au-Prince is the capital city of Haiti and the largest city of the Caribbean country. Whilst Haiti has a population of approximately 10 million, the Port-au-Prince city has a population of around 1 million people. The Haitian education system is based on the French system, and begins at the preschool moving onto elementary education, which is compulsory. The nest stage of education is the secondary education where 90.5% of secondary schools are private schools. The university was established in the 1820s, has come under the control of the government. Port-au-Prince also has other educational institutions including vocational schools and international schools like Union School, founded in 1919, which is an American-style pre-college education.
