Georgetown is the capital of Guyana and is the country’s largest urban area. The city is the countries retail and financial centre. It has an estimated population of 235,000 people. The unemployment rate in Guyana has remained at 21 percent since 2011 which is some way form the country’s record low rate of 11 percent. There is one public university in Guyana, the University of Guyana, which is located in Georgetown that was set up in 1963. The university offers courses in subject areas such as health science, technology and earth and environmental sciences. There is also 4 or 5 private universities in the country that are run by private companies often from outside of Guyana. There are 2 medical schools.
