Guatemala City is the capital and biggest city in Guatemala. It is the most populated city in Central America with and estimated population of around 1.1 million people. The country of Guatemala has an unemployment rate of around 2.9 percent which is just short of the countries record low of 2.4 recorded in 2007. Guatemala currently has the highest illiteracy rate in Central America but has developed a plan to combat this. The low literacy rate is due to the cost of books, supplies, school transport and uniform making school in accessible to the poorer communities. Middle and upper class pupils often attend private schools instead of the free public school. There is only one public university in Guatemala, Universidad de San Carlos de Guatemala and 14 private ones. This again makes higher education inaccessible to the poorer communities in cities outside of Guatemala City. The university has colleges for agriculture, architecture, economics and humanities. This university is the oldest in North America other than Harvard.
