The University of Athens is the oldest higher education institution in the Modern Greek state and has been a running establishment since 1837. The university consists of two departments with one of them holding humanities subjects and the other holding science subjects. The National Technical University of Athens is also amongst the oldest higher education institutions and is considered to be the most prestigious of them all.
