Conakry is the capital and the largest city of Guinea. It is a port city and is the economic capital of the country. The official language of the city is French. It has an estimated population of around 1.6 million people. The unemployment rate in Guinea increased between 2011 and 2012 from 1.3 percent to around 3.8 percent. This is an all-time high for the country. There are currently two universities in Guinea. The newest of the universities is Kofi Annan University that opened in 1996 in the city of Conakry. The university is named after the former secretary general of the United Nations. The university offers degrees and masters qualifications in subjects ranging from art and humanities to medicine and health.
