The largest university is the Tbilisi State University. Founded in 1918, it is the oldest university in the Caucus region and has over 35,000 student and 5,000 faculty and staff members. The University aims to become a leading research university, and has over twenty institutes and centres, annually carrying out more than 100 scientific projects and publishing over 800 scientific works. The Tbilisi State Medical University, also situated in Tbilisi, has the distinction of being the largest medical university in the Caucasus region, with 5,000 undergraduate and postgraduate students enrolled. Tbilisi has an unemployment rate of 30.1%.
