Originally named the National University of Gabon, it was renamed after President Omar Bongo in 1978. The university has a number of departments offering programmes in administration, engineering, forestry, hydraulics, literature, law, science, teacher training and management. There are a number of primary schools and secondary schools in Gabon, which are taught through French. The education system is still largely based on the French education model. The Ministry of Technical Education and Vocational Training also runs a number of vocational and on-going adult education programmes. The unemployment rate is 20%.
