Tampere is situated in Pirkanmaa, which is southern Finland and the most heavily populated inland city out of all the Nordic countries. The city is the third most populous municipality and second largest urban area in the country with a population of around 200,300. Tampere has four higher education establishments with around 40,000 students spread over the city, there are two polytechnic establishments and two universities. The University of Tampere sits close to the city center with over 16,000 students and the Tampere University of Technology which has over 12,000 students. The polytechnic institutions are the Tampereen ammattikorkkeakoulu and the police college of Finland.
