Guayaquil is the largest city in Ecuador with a population of around 3.5 million people. It is located on the bank of the Guayas River. Spanish is the official language of Ecuador with Amerindian languages being spoken in some regions and small villages. English is common however, especially in tourism and business sectors. The unemployment rate in Guayaquil is around 7.6%. This is slightly higher than the national average of 4.6%.
