Guayaquil is the largest city in Ecuador with a population of around 3.5 million people. It is located on the bank of the Guayas River. University of Guayaquil is a public university which was founded in 1883 and has a student population of around 80,000 students. It operates six other campuses across Ecuador. Spanish is the official language of Ecuador with Amerindian languages being spoken in some regions and small villages. English is common however, especially in tourism and business sectors. The unemployment rate in Guayaquil is around 7.6%. This is slightly higher than the national average of 4.6%.
