Algiers is the capital of Algeria. It is also the largest city in the country. The city has a population of 3.4 million people which is more than double that of the census in 1998 when it stood at 1.519 million people. Algeria has a number of universities and higher education institutes that include specialised teacher training schools. Curriculums in universities are standardised by the ministry of higher education. The University of Algiers was founded in 1909 and has 7 faculties. The universities was founded out of a collection of higher education institutes that were founded in the 1800’s during the French colonial period of Algiers. This university was only the second university to be established in Africa. Among the seven faculties the university has faculties of law, medicine and Islamic sciences.
