Santo Domingo is the capital city of the Dominican Republic and the biggest city in the country. It has an estimated population of around 965,000 people. The unemployment rate in Dominican Republic went down between 2013 and 2014. During this period it went from 15 percent to 14.9 percent. Between 2000 and 2014 the average rate of unemployment for the country was around 15.5 percent. The highest rate recorded is 19.7 percent in 2004 and the lowest was 13.9 in 2000. There are eighteen universities in Santo Domingo. The Universidad Autónoma de Santo Domingo is the only public university in the city. It has four schools of teaching; Medicine, Law, Theology, and the Arts.
