Santiago, a conurbation of Chile, has an average population of roughly 5,145, 600 spread across 247.6 square miles of land. Education in Chile is divided into preschool, primary school, secondary school and then technical or higher education - meaning university. Since the year 2014, Chile has been undergoing an extensive reform on their publicly funded education system. This reform process includes the abolition of mandatory co-payments (where a parent pays a tuition fee to have their child enrolled at a school), the removal of current selection processes, conversion of for-profit schools into non-profit organisations and establishments and to provide free tertiary education to the poorest 60% of the country’s population – meaning traditional universities and accredited non-profit technical schools.
