The University of Bern, located within the city, was founded in 1834, however its roots go back to the sixteenth century. It is the third largest University in Switzerland and it is home to over 17,000 students. Bern is recognised as a Cultural World Heritage Site by UNESCO due to its medieval structure and buildings and its famous Zytglogge clock tower is a contributing factor towards this award. Bern is also known for being the headquarters of the Federal Palace, or Bundeshaus, in which the national parliament is held.
