Rio de Janeiro is located in the metropolitan area and is the second most populated. The city is the second largest city in Brazil and has a population of around 6,500,000 inhabitants. Rio has been ranked as the eighteenth largest city in the world. The city is home to various large industries including oil, mining and telecommunications. Rio is home to world famous landmarks for example Christ the Redeemer (one of the seven wonders). In 2016 Rio will be host to the summer Olympics and Paralympics.Schools in Rio are primarily taught in Portuguese but secondary schools teach in English and Spanish. Like most cities in Brazil they are home to various international schools including American School of Rio de Janeiro, the school is private and independent with offers teachings to nursery ages to grade 12. Students can learn a range of subjects including information technology, art, athletics and drama.Rio has around 90 educational institutions including universities and research centres including the fifth best Latin American university Federal University of Rio de Janeiro. The university has over 55,000 students and 9,000 staff members. The Latin American university is a centre of excellence with its teaching practices. The educational centre is divided into six university centres including health sciences, technology, natural sciences and law and economics.
