The only schools available before the 20^th century were Quranic schools which were solely for the study of the Qur’an. The first modern school was an elementary school opened in 1892 in Manama. The school took a long time to get established, as only a few parents approved of non-traditional religious education. There are a large number of educational establishments now, including Arabian Gulf University, Bahrain Institute of Banking and Finance and Ahlia University.
