Chittagong is a large seaport city and the financial centre in the south east of Bangladesh. Chittagong has a population of 6.5 million people making it the second largest city in Bangladesh. It is located on the edge of Karnaphuli River and the Bay of Bengal. The general education systems follows a national curriculum and requires students to take four major examinations before they can move onto higher forms of education. There is another education system called the Madrasah education system which is based on Islamic studies. These are also controlled by examinations. Several private schools operate in Chittagong which follow the General Certificate of Education. Major higher education establishments include Chittagong University and the Chittagong Veterinary and Animal Sciences University.
