Dhaka is the capital of Bangladesh. It has a population of 12 million people. Dhaka is the political, cultural and economic centre of Bangladesh and was voted the Asian Capital of Culture by ISESCO in 2012. Dhaka has the largest number of educational establishments in any city in Bangladesh. Education is mostly taught in Bengali but English is also used widely and taught to most students. Muslim families however like to educate their children using mostly religious studies. Fifty two universities are based in Dhaka including Dhaka College, the oldest higher education institute in the city. Since then, a large number of public and private establishments have opened offering a wide variety of undergraduate and graduate degrees and doctoral programmes. Unemployment rates are set to improve in Dhaka, with rates of only 23%, but the government is building shopping malls and several foreign companies are constructing buildings.
