Baku is the capital city of Azerbaijan. It is the largest city in the Caspian Sea and the Caucasus region and lies 28 metres below sea level, making it the lowest lying capital city in the world. It is home to 2 million people, approximately 25% of Azerbaijan’s population. In 1919, Azerbaijan established its first university, the Baku State University. When Azerbaijan gained its independence in 1991, a number of private educational establishments were created such as Qafqaz University and Khazar University.
