Kabul is the capital of Afghanistan and has the largest population of any city in Afghanistan, with an estimated population of 3,289,000 people. Kabul is the 5th fastest growing city in the world. Since the 2002 public and private schools have been reopening after they were shut down or destroyed during fighting in the 1990’s and 80’s. Both boys and girls are encouraged to attend school in Kabul and the ministry of education in Afghanistan are planning to build more schools in order to cope with an influx of new pupils. Kabul has a number of universities in the city. The oldest of the universities in the city is the Kabul University which was founded in 1932. The university has around 25,000 pupils, of which 38% are women. The aim of this university is for it to become an internationally recognised institute for learning and research.
