Dubai is the most populous city in the United Arab Emirates with an estimated population of around 2.1 million people. Dubai is one of only two emirates to have veto power over critical matters of national importance in the country's legislature. As of 2009, there are 79 public schools run by the Ministry of Education for the Dubai people as well as 145 private schools. The public schools are taught in Arabic with a distinct emphasis on teaching English as a second language. Private schools on the other hand are taught in English as they cater to the expat communities. Some schools in the city offer international education, teaching one or more of the International Baccalaurate programs for students aged between 3 and 19. The most well-known universities in Dubai are American University in Dubai, Al Ghurair University, The American College of Dubai, University of Wollongong in Dubai, British University in Dubai. These universities offer courses in Business Administration, Engineering, Architecture and Interior Design. The American University in Dubai is the only university outside the United States and Latin America to be directly accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.
