Abu Dhabi is the capital city of the United Arab Emirates. It is the second most populous city behind Dubai. It is also the capital of the largest of the seven member emirates of the UAE, Abu Dhabi emirate. Abu Dhabi is a rapidly growing and developing urban area with a high average in come. This has made it in to a large and advance metropolis. Abu Dhabi has an estimated population of 613,400 people. Education in the United Arab Emirates consists of primary schools, middle school and high schools. Public education is free for all UAE citizens. In 2007, the literacy rate was 91%. Thousands of citizens are seeking formal learning at 86 adult learning centres across the country. Abu Dhabi has a number of international and local universities that’s include campuses for universities such as New York Institute of Technology, Higher Colleges of Technology, New York Film Academy, Paris-Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi and United Arab Emirates University. The Abu Dhabi campus of the New York University was opened in 2010 with an inaugural class of 150 pupils. NYUAD functions as a separate liberal arts college within a university that offers complete degree programs. It describes itself as the “Worlds Honour College”. In 1975 the first government institution of higher education was opened in the United Arab Emirates. This was the United Arab Emirates University. It is centrally located in Al Ain but also has a campus in Abu Dhabi. The university has graduate and under graduate programs in nine different colleges. These colleges include: business and economics, education, engineering, food and agriculture, humanities and social sciences and law. They also offer foundation programs to prepare students for university studies. They have foundation courses in in English, Arabic and Mathematics and other support in making the transition from school to university.
